1959 Gibson Gibsonette
A total treat this one! Kept by the owner for a few years in the garage he wanted it back up and playing. Plenty of work to be done, original caps had exploded and a previous tech had done some quick work tacking in new parts.
The Gibson Gibsonette was an early model for Gibson and seems to have had several iterations and name changes. The core circuit is the GA-8 with a 5Y3GT rectifier, a ECC83 pre-amp valve and then two 6V6s working in parallel class A which you don’t see a lot.
The whole circuit was taken apart and built up again, lots of new parts needed but the core of the amp - the transformers, the pots, the speaker are all original. The valves are unlikely to be original but they were old.
Really enjoyed this one as I haven’t had an old Gibson amp before. Did it sound good? well…it definitely went into overdrive nicely but I think I’d replace that original speaker for something a bit clearer or maybe an EQ pedal to just even things out a little.
